UN TOURISM-ETC DATALAB WEBINAR: MEASURING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF TOURISM

The webinar will look at a variety of approaches to measuring the carbon footprint of the tourism industry. Each perspective offers valuable and practical insights to bolster the transition towards achieving net-zero emissions. We aim for this to support the adoption of similar tools among European NTOs.

Representatives from the German National Tourist Board (GNTB), Fáilte Ireland and Mabrian Technologies will present their projects focused in this topic to provide in-depth insights into the innovative approaches they have employed in these regards.

Matthias Hickl

Matthias Hickl has been engaged in Market Research for over two decades. With a focus on fast moving technology markets Matthias travelled the world while holding leading global management roles at GfK SE. Matthias joined GNTB`s head office in Frankfurt in May 2020 leading the newly created Business Intelligence unit there. This position embraces the sectors Market Analysis, Marketing Effectiveness and CRM as well as C-Suite, partner and stakeholder reporting. In addition, the role comprises Innovation Management (IM). IM has already delivered highly appealing virtual and augmented reality contents in order to present and promote Germany as a very attractive travel destination. Matthias further focus lies in converting research data into sustainability performance indicators.

Carlos Cendra

Partner and Director of Marketing and Communications at Mabrian Technologies.An enthusiastic entrepreneur with a passion for marketing, tourism, and the sea.
Educated in business, marketing and leadership at international schools, he brings over 15 years of experience in leadership roles across sectors such as Marketing and International Trade, Franchises, and Tourism. He became a partner at Mabrian in 2017 when he realized that Artificial Intelligence and data had the potential to revolutionize decision-making in the tourism industry, making it more efficient and sustainable. Today, Mabrian Technologies stands as the global leader in Tourism Intelligence, serving clients in 40 countries.

Orla Canavan

Orla is the Industry Analysis Manager in Fáilte Ireland, Ireland’s national tourism development authority.

Orla works as part of a multi-disciplinary team monitoring the industry’s performance, analysing and evidencing developmental challenges facing tourism businesses. Responsible for managing end-to end B2B research projects alongside exploring the value add of third-party and big data into the analysis mix. Orla has also managed the evaluation of the impact of Fáilte Ireland tourism enterprise supports, alongside the setup of national tourism carbon footprint monitoring systems.

Vanessa Mack

Vanessa is an Insights Officer on the Economic & Industry Analysis team in Fáilte Ireland, the national tourism development authority in Ireland.

Vanessa manages the Community research project for Fáilte Ireland which monitors residents’ attitudes towards domestic and overseas tourism. Vanessa is also responsible for tracking and reporting on air and sea access to the Republic of Ireland as well as on accommodation stock.

Vanessa has also been working on generating new tourism insights using big data by looking at tourist movement patterns. More recently, Vanessa has been involved in one of Fáilte Ireland’s key Climate Action projects setting up a tourism carbon footprint monitor and providing businesses with international sector-specific benchmarks.
