Summary

European tourism holds firm despite rising uncertainty and changing traveller preferences.

European tourism continued its strong performance despite an uncertain geopolitical context. International tourist arrivals increased 5.0% year-to-date over the same period in 2025.

The latest IMF World Economic Outlook points to weaker investment and consumer spending, which are expected to slow growth in the euro area to 1.1% in 2026 amid heightened economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

As consumer confidence weakens, travellers are prioritising destinations perceived as safe and that offer good value for money, while travelling closer to home and spreading trips more evenly across the year.

Northern Europe outperformed all other European subregions so far this year. Southern & Mediterranean Europe held up well, while Central European destinations continued to attract travellers seeking new experiences and better value for money as affordability becomes an increasingly important consideration.
