Summary

According to the latest Long-Haul Travel Barometer, 2/2022 (LHTB), which provides insights on traveller sentiment for summer 2022 (May-August), the appetite for overseas travel to Europe from several source markets has increased. Nonetheless, it still remains below pre-pandemic levels.

  • Intention for long-haul travel remains weak in key markets amid worsening economic prospects, COVID-19 and geopolitical shocks.
  •  Brazil is the only market where the travel sentiment increased significantly compared to a year ago.
  • COVID-19 concerns and high travel-related costs are the main deterrents to long-haul travel in summer 2022.

The Long-Haul Travel Barometer provides forward-looking information about short-term travel trends among potential travellers from Brazil, China, Canada (new market), Japan, Russia and the US. The analysis sheds light on travellers’ preferences, motivations and barriers related to travelling to and within Europe. Results are based on 1,000 interviews conducted in the five markets every four months.

The results of the survey are complemented by Social Media Listening analysis about Europe’s attractiveness (TRAVELSAT© Pulse). The analysis discloses the themes that drive positive and negative web conversations regarding destination Europe. The detailed results are included in the report “Europe E-Reputation” – please scroll down to see and download the report.

The Long-Haul Travel Barometer is a  joint project of the European Travel Commission (ETC) and  Eurail B.V. Full results are available to the members of partner organisations only. The project is realised by TCI Research.

This project is co-funded by the European Union.
