Global long-haul travel sentiment remains subdued in summer 2026, including travel to Europe, according to the latest Long-Haul Travel Barometer (LHTB) 2/2026. Affordability concerns continue to weigh on travel decisions, while geopolitical uncertainty and a growing preference for shorter, more flexible trips are influencing traveller behaviour. Despite softer demand, Europe continues to outperform many competing destinations, supported by its strong safety reputation and enduring appeal among long-haul travellers.
This edition of the Barometer focuses on travel intentions for the May–August 2026 period. Among others, it highlights evolving travel patterns characterised by increased budget awareness, growing interest in rail travel, and rising demand for nature, wellness and experience-led travel. The findings also show that while geopolitical tensions, including the Middle East conflict, are influencing perceptions through higher travel costs and longer journey times, safety, value and connectivity remain the key factors shaping destination choice.

The analysis sheds light on travellers’ preferences, motivations and barriers related to travelling to and within Europe. Results are based on 1,000 interviews conducted in the five markets every four months. The Long-Haul Travel Barometer is a joint project in cooperation with Eurail B.V. Full results are available to the members of partner organisations only. The project is realised by Silverlining Research.
