ETC Webinar – Measuring What Matters: Sustainable Tourism Indicators for Decision-Making

This webinar will present findings from the project “Measuring What Matters: Sustainable Tourism Indicators for Decision-Making”, conducted by the Global Destination Sustainability Movement on behalf of the European Travel Commission. The study supports National Tourism Organisations (NTOs) in strengthening sustainable destination management through the use of relevant indicators and concrete actions.

Consultants from the GDS-Movement will share insights from the research, including a comparison of ETC’s Sustainable Tourism Indicator set with leading global frameworks, analysis of recent trends and external pressures on the data, and importantly, recommendations to improve indicator usability at the national level. Participants will gain practical knowledge to guide evidence-based decision-making in sustainable tourism.

The webinar will last approximately 60 minutes, including a Q&A session at the end.

Janie Neumann

Janie Neumann is an expert in sustainable and regenerative tourism with over 20 years of experience. At the GDS-Movement, she directs strategic projects and partnerships across the UK and Europe, including serving as Project Director for the European Travel Commission’s “Measuring What Matters” Report.

Janie has led on destination work,  such as the North East England Regenerative Visitor Economy Framework and co-authored Visit England’s guide to regenerative destination management. Her work supports DMOs and NTOs in aligning with the GDS-Index, improving sustainability performance across environmental, social, and economic pillars. Previously, she was Sustainability Manager at VisitScotland for over a decade and an advisor for the Green Tourism programme, helping hundreds of businesses advance sustainable practices.

 

Alicia Winfield O’Hare

Alicia is a changemaker at the GDS-Movement, where she works closely with DMOs and NTOs across the UK and Ireland to strengthen destination performance using the GDS-Index sustainability criteria. She supports research and analysis for GDS-Index Reports, contributes to the development of the Index, and was actively involved in data analysis for the European Travel Commission’s “Measuring What Matters” Indicators project.

Previously, Alicia led regional submissions to the GDS-Index for nearly three years as Sustainability Lead at the West Midlands Growth Company, where she also championed Green Tourism accreditation and chaired the Net Zero Working Group. Her background includes contributing to the STEAM tourism economic impact model and delivering key visitor attraction projects as part of the 2022 Commonwealth Games Business and Tourism Programme.

Claudia Bustinza

Claudia Bustinza is a sustainable tourism expert with over 15 years of experience developing tourism management systems for governments, businesses, and international organisations. As GDS-Index Manager at the GDS-Movement, she oversees the development of the GDS-Index standard and assurance programme, ensuring alignment with global benchmarks and EU policy.

Previously, Claudia spent five years at the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) as Assurance Manager, where she developed the Accreditation Manual, evaluated sustainability standards, and led global training efforts. She also served as a Tourism Specialist at Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism and has led impactful projects across Latin America and Europe
